Bible Study: The Character Traits of a Godly Woman

We have so many things going on nowadays that being a ‘Godly Woman’ seems a very difficult task. Social media has painted a picture of what a woman should look like in order to fit in. Looking at this, you should ask yourself: but are they godly? If not, we shouldn’t even be interested in emulating these women. But, what actually makes a godly woman? What does she look like?

To answer these two questions, you should first turn to God for He will give you the best answer. And guess what? He has already given us these answers in the Bible. If there is anything that’s bothering you, or if you want a deeper understanding regarding any topic, then the Bible is your place to be! By doing Bible study, you are spending alone-time with God and thereby strengthening your relationship with Him. When I asked God to show me the traits of a Godly woman, He told me this: “A godly woman is a woman that goes after MY WILL, she is a woman that puts her own will aside and wants to follow Me with her whole heart.” Furthermore, a godly woman does the following;

She goes after the will of God
When we open our bibles to 2 Peter 1:5-8, we read: “For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love” (ESV)

She opens her mouth with wisdom
A godly women knows the power the tongue holds, as the Bible describes in Proverbs 31:26 “She opens her mouth with wisdom, and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.” (ESV) She doesn’t talk anyhow but she thinks before she speaks.

She is an example
Also, she makes sure that she is an example of Christ, as Christ came on earth to be an example for us. The Bible is clear about this in 1 Peter 2:21 “For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps.” (NKJV)

She is not selfish
A godly woman is not selfish, for she thinks about others as well. She doesn’t forget herself because she knows her worth (!) but she does NOT know pride! Philippians 2:3-5 says “Don’t do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble towards one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another’s interest, not just for your own. The attitude you have is the one that Christ Jesus had.” (GNB)

She has a good reputation
A godly woman seeks to do the right thing and have a good reputation. For example let us look at how Ruth’s behaviour made her receive favour in the eyes of Boaz (read Ruth 2:10-12). “Boaz replied, “I’ve been told all about what you have done for your mother-in-law since the death of your husband—how you left your father and mother and your homeland and came to live with a people you did not know before.” (Ruth 2:11, NIV)

So on the outside, a godly woman doesn’t look any different than an other woman, but if you take a closer look at her heart and her character, you will see that she is indeed different. You can recognise a godly woman by her character traits. I want to encourage you to not give up on being that godly woman Christ called you to be. He has given you wisdom and strength in abundance. I know it’s not always easy but as long as we have each other as sisters in Christ we can surely get there. Let’s hold on, support one another, pull through, and make our Father proud!

God bless,
