I Am Becoming the Proverbs 31 Woman

Black woman praying to God

I have read Proverbs 31 so many times and I can understand why many woman want to emulate this woman. Me myself, I am trying to emulate this type of woman too. When you read proverbs 31:10 (KJV) it says: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies.” The Hebrew Bible translation refers to a virtuous woman as a woman of valour. Now I have come across the word valour many times in the Bible, but never considered what it actually means. When I looked it up, the following words came up: bravery, courage and fearless. And yet another synonym for the word virtuous is “backbone“. Reading this lets us know that, for us as women, there are requirements needed of us that will enable us to help our household. Now the word backbone is very strong. We often say, behind every successful man is a strong woman: the backbone. What a revelation!

When we open our Bibles to Proverbs 31 verse 11 (KJV) it says: “the heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil.” Other translations of “need of spoil” refer to it as “lack of gain”. This reveals the backbone synonym of valour. Now at this point, I am getting excited! A backbone is someone who you can rely on, a true helper. Now is it not true that God created women in Genesis 2:18 to be a helpmeet (helper comparable to him)? Let us continue, because the revelations and understanding that we can obtain from this Bible scripture are too much! The proverbs 31 woman is a hardworking one. She arises early, makes sure her house is set and there is food in the house. This woman makes sure that there will be no problem in her household, because she ensures that everything that is needed is available. Doesn’t the proverb go “The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach?” She sure has that covered! When we continue, we read that this woman is called blessed by her children. What woman does not want to be called blessed by her children?Poem about Proverbs 31It makes me wonder what she is doing to her children, that they can say that to her. Let us be honest, we do not hear such words being said to our mothers all too often in this day and age, at least not the way it used to be. So what makes her children say this? Is it because they see what she is capable of doing? Or is it because they see other young girls trying to emulate her? Or maybe because everywhere these children go, people speak highly of her? Personally, I believe that het children call her this because she the true embodiment of a wise woman. The lifestyle of a Proverbs 31 woman is a lifestyle that young ladies should want to emulate. She is a wise woman and we all know what Scripture says about the wise and foolish ones: “Every wise woman buildeth her house, but the foolish plucketh it down with her hands.”(Proverbs 14:1, KJV) So a Proverb 31 woman is brave, courageous, hardworking, caring, giving, graceful and blessed one, who is the backbone of her husband.

So how can you become this woman? The only way is when you cover yourself in Christ. For the Bible states: “He who FINDS a wife, finds a good thing and obtains FAVOUR from the Lord” (Proverbs 18:22, ESV) When reading verse 30 in proverbs 31 (KJV) it states: “Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain: but a woman that fearerth the Lord shall be praised.” Therefore, we women do not need to look for the favour that man gives, but the favour of the Most High Himself; favour that flows through your entire (future) household. And let us not get things twisted, beauty is indeed vain, because when beauty fades away, what else do you have to offer? Some of us we get favour before men because of beauty, but this is simply outward appearance. What happens when the outward beauty fades away?

Let us remember that the Proverbs 31 woman is more about character than outward beauty. If we, women, want to define womanhood as it should, be from a Biblical point a view, then Proverbs 31:10-31 is our guide!

God Bless,
